All HME, Rehab and O&P facilities should be aware CMS has added five additional certification standards that every Medicare DMEPOS supplier must meet in order to obtain and retain their billing privileges with the National Supplier Clearinghouse (NSC). Failure to be in compliance with these standards is grounds for revoking a supplier’s billing number.

And, effective immediately, NSC Medicare Administration Contractors (NSC-MAC) have begun performing fraud analyses of all current DMEPOS suppliers, initial applicants and Medicare re-enrollment applicants. DMEPOS suppliers are being assigned one of four fraud and abuse risk levels, ranging from low risk to high risk. The NSC-MACs are taking several factors into consideration (along with information from the OIG, CMS and/or a PSC) one of which includes a set number of unscheduled site visits.

In response to the new standards and likelihood of increased site-visits, VGM Group analysts have created an updated “Medicare Supplier Standards and Procedures Resources Guide”, copy attached. This guide is designed as a toolkit for compliance and for your continued Medicare supplier enrollment in good standing. We have included a regulatory analysis of the standards, enrollment instructions and various templates and forms.

Most importantly, we also include suggestions for compliance and documentation tips relative to each of the 26 Supplier Standards. In the event of an unscheduled site visit, this guide will help ensure that you (or your support staff in your absence) have quick access to the appropriate information and documentation. This will ease the burden on both your facility and the duties of the NSC or MAC representatives. The guide, when documented properly, will provide your company with additional assurance of your continued enrollment as a Medicare supplier.
